Southern Baseball Takes Out Lincoln, 8-1 In Series Opener

Joplin, Mo. -- Chris Hoffman threw a complete-game and the Missouri Southern baseball team had four different players with two RBIs each as the Lions defeated visiting Lincoln today 8-1 at Warren Turner Field. 

The Lions (29-16, 19-15 MIAA) got a gem from Hoffman as the senior threw nine innings, striking out six and walking only one, while allowing one un-earned run and throwing just 98 pitches to move his record to 2-0 on the season. 

Hoffman also went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored to extend his hitting streak to 17-straight games. Tyler Sutherland, Danny Biggs and Hayden Steele had two hits each, while Jacob Bryant, Sutherland, Brett Graham and Steele drove in two each. Bryant hit his first home run of the season as he scored twice, while Trever Burkdoll scored twice, as well. Jesse Rall had a hit and a run scored, extending his reach base safely streak to 73-straight games. 

Lincoln (1-43, 0-34 MIAA) had two with a pair of hits each. 

The Lions got on top with three in the second, starting with Bryant's home run. Hoffman singled behind Bryant and Sutherland doubled to right center to score Bryant. 

Lincoln scored an unearned run in third, but the Lions answered back with single runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings. Graham had an RBI single in the fifth to score Rall, while Steele's double in the sixth scored Burkdoll. 

Southern scored three more in the eighth. Steele's second double scored Biggs for the first run, and with the bases loaded, Sutherland singled to right to score Steele. Graham walked scoring Bryant for the final run. 

The two teams will be back at it tomorrow afternoon as it will be senior day for the ten seniors on this year's roster. First pitch from Turner field is slated for 1 pm.
