Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team led 5-1 in the eighth inning, but Fort Hays scored four runs in the eighth and a run in the ninth to take the finale of the series between the two teams, 6-5 today at Warren Turner Field.
Southern (28-15, 18-14 MIAA) got an impressive game from
Chris Hoffman both on the mound and at the plate. The senior started and went seven innings, striking out six and allowing only three runs to suffer the no-decision. He also went 2-for-5 at the plate to extend his hitting streak to 15 games.
Jacob Bryant,
Tyler Sutherland, and
Matt Smith had a pair of hits each, while Bryant drove in a run and scored once, while
Danny Biggs drove in two with a run scored.
Richie Gorski had a hit and a run scored, while Smith scored and drove in a run, as well.
Hayden Steele had a hit and a run scored.
Jesse Rall picked up a walk early in the game and has now reached base safely in all 43 games this season. He did that feat in the final 28 games of the 2015 season and the streak is now at 71-straight games.
Kyle McCulloch came into relieve Hoffman in the eighth and surrendered the tying runs, while
Conner Matson threw an inning and two thirds, picking up the loss and moving his record to 4-1 on the season.
Hays (18-25, 12-20 MIAA) had two hits each from Connor Ross and Caleb Cherryholmes, but it was a grand slam from Austin Unrein that tied the game in the eighth.
The Tigers started the scoring with a run in the first, but the Lions tied it up with a run of their own in the fourth on an RBI single from Smith. Southern plated a run in the fifth in an RBI from Sutherland, but broke it open in the sixth starting with a two-RBI triple from Biggs. Bryant singled home Biggs to make the score 5-1, Lions after six.
Hays, however, hit a grand slam in the eighth and scored a run in the ninth to go ahead. The Lions threatened in the ninth, but couldn't plate a run.
Southern will be back in action this Wednesday as the Lions travel to Pittsburg to take on Pittsburg State in a mid-week conference game. First pitch is slated for 6 pm.
