Southern Baseball Falls 10-1 To Pittsburg State

Joplin, Mo. -- The visiting Pittsburg State Gorillas scored five runs in each of the first two innings, but the Southern bullpen held PSU scoreless in the final seven innings, however the Lions' baseball team could not complete the comeback, falling 10-1 today in MIAA action.

Southern (26-14, 16-13 MIAA) got a 3-for-4 day today from Chris Hoffman as he drove in a run and scored once with his sixth home run of the season. Jesse Rall and Brett Graham had the Lions' other two hits.

Cody Smith started and went just a third of an inning, moving his record to 1-2 on the season. Matt Harvey threw an inning and a third, but it was the trio of Sean Goostree, Trenton Moeller and Austin Aspegren that held the Gorillas' bats at bey. Goostree went five and a third and allowed just two hits, while Moeller and Aspegren held PSU hitless.

Pitt (11-27, 6-23 MIAA) had two hits each from Brett Macary, Jacob Boylan, Christian Arnold and Chase Kilgore.

The Gorillas scored five runs in the first and the second innings as they batted around in each frame.

The Lions added Hoffman's home run in the fourth, but aside from that, there was no scoring from either team the rest of the game.

Southern will be back in action on Friday afternoon as the Lions play host to Fort Hays State. First pitch from Warren Turner Field is slated for 3 pm.
