Rall sets home run record as Lions win 8-2 at No. 16 Central Missouri

Warrensburg, Mo. -- Jesse Rall hit his 17th home run of the season, breaking the MSSU single-season home run record and Cody Hutchinson went the distance as the Missouri Southern baseball team won 8-2 tonight at No. 16 ranked Central Missouri.

Southern (26-11, 16-10 MIAA) got a pair of homers on the day as Rall hit his record-setting shot and Hayden Steele hit No. 7 of the season. Brett Graham went 3-for-4 on the day with a pair of runs and an RBI, while Rall, Tyler Sutherland, Richie Gorski and Steele had two hits each. Steele drove in two and scored twice, while Gorski and Sutherland scored a run each. Danny Biggs, Jacob Bryant and Matt Smith had an RBI each.

Hutchinson was masterful on the mound as he struck out four and walked just one, while allowing two runs in the complete-game win to move to 5-4 on the season.

Central Missouri (23-10, 21-5 MIAA) got three hits from Cole Distler and two from Matt Safranek.

The Lions got on top with a run in the second on Steele's home run. After the Mules scored single runs in the second and the third to go up 2-1, Southern answered with four runs in the fourth.

Sutherland and Rall started the fourth with singles and the pair moved up on a throwing error. Graham singled home Sutherland and Steele singled home Rall. Biggs then singled home Graham and Bryant drove in Steele with an RBI single of his own.

In the fifth, the Lions got a pair of runs all with two outs. Graham singled and advanced on an error and Gorski doubled him home. Steele walked and Smith singled up the middle to score Gorski and put runners at first and second.

Rall added his record-setting home run in the ninth for the Lions' final tally. The 17 home runs passed a record he had shared last season with Randy Braun (1981), Mark Handel (1987) and Jim Baranoski (1989).

The two teams will be back at it tomorrow afternoon with first pitch slated for 1 pm.
