Kearney, Neb. -- The seventh-ranked Missouri Southern baseball team scored 13 runs over the final five innings and won 16-7 today at Nebraska-Kearney to take the finale of the three-game series.
The Lions (11-3, 3-3 MIAA) had 23 hits as a team today with
Hayden Steele,
Tyler Sutherland and
Richie Gorski all collecting four hits each. Steele and Gorski drove in three and scored three times, while
Chris Hoffman went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored.
Jackson Cain went 3-for-6 with three runs scored, while
Matt Smith was 2-for-4 with three driven in and two runs scored.
Jesse Rall and
Brett Graham scored a run each, while Rall dorve in one.
Trever Burkdoll had two hits and three RBIs.
Hoffman started and went three innings, while
Austin Aspegren went five innings out of the pen to pick up win number one on the season. Aspegren allowed just three hits, while striking out nine and walking two.
Zach Litchen pitched the ninth.
UNK (7-7, 5-1 MIAA) got a 3-for-5 day at the plate from catcher Dallas Schramm.
Southern scored a run in the first on an RBI from Sutherland. The Lopers answered back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, but a two-run homer from Gorski in the top of the second tied the score at three.
UNK added three runs in the third to go up 6-3, but that's when the Lions' bats went to work. Southern scored two in the fifth, a single run in each of the sixth and seventh and exploded for six runs in the eighth and three more in the ninth.
The Lions had seven doubles in the game, as well as a triple with Steele and Sutherland addding two doubles each and Cain picking up his second triple of the season.
Southern will be back in action next weekend as the Lions play host to 30th ranked and MIAA leading Emporia State. The three-game series will start with a single, nine-inning game from Warren Turner Field at 5 pm on Friday evening.
