Joplin, Mo. - The Missouri Southern Lions out hit visiting Pittsburg State 15-10 on the day but split a pair of non-conference games winning 2-0 and falling 6-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Game OneSouthern (10-13, 0-2 MIAA) got busy in the bottom of the first when with one out sophomore
Abi Corbett, freshman
Ashley Caldarella, and senior
Sarah Williams loaded the bases with three straight singles before the Pittsburg State defense clamped down and got out of the inning with no harm done. The third inning was a different story for the Lions as Corbett led off with a single to the second baseman and advanced to second on Caldarella's sacrifice bunt. Following Williams' walk with runners on the corners freshman
Angel Badalamenti executed a squeeze play that score Corbett  and moved Williams to second. Southern tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when freshman
Kylie Wesbrooks took a 2-2 pitch on the shoulder and moved to second on an infield single by senior
Alana Hester. Corbett reached on a fielder's choice that forced Wesbrooks out at third before Caldarella's singe to shallow center that bounced out of the glove of the diving PSU center fielder scored Hester from second for the 2-0 win.
Senior
Ashley Lutz (5-6) pitched the complete game shut out allowing just three hits with three strike outs.
Game TwoIn the second game of the twin bill, Pittsburg State struck first and often in the early going as they pushed across a run in the opening frame and two each in the top of the second and third for an early 5-0 lead. After making a pitching change to freshman
Taurean Guzman the Lions held Pitt State to just one run on one hit for the remaining four innings. Corbett led the Lions in game two going 2-for-3, the only player with multiple hits.
Sophomore
Kali' Hodson (3-4) got the start and went two full innings before being pulled in the third after three batters. Hodson allowed five runs, four earned, on six hits with one strike out.
On The DaySophomore
Myranda Stewart led the Lions at the plate going 3-for-5 (.600) with a hit by pitch and Corbett finished 4-for-7 (.571) at the dish with a run scored. Guzman led the Lions in the circle allowing an opponent's batting average of just 0.71 with Lutz allowing a .136 average.
Up NextThe Lions will travel to Bolivar on Tuesday the 8th as they take on Southwest Baptist in a MIAA double header. First pitch from SBU softball field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
