Lions Drop Pair of Games on Day 2 of Apple Market Classic

St. Joseph, Mo. - The Missouri Southern Lions dropped a pair of games in day two action at the Apple Market Classic hosted by Missouri Western at Heritage Park on Saturday afternoon.

Game One
The Lions (14-19) struck first against the University of Mary (6-11) in the second inning as freshman Taurean Guzman led off the inning with a double to right center. Freshman Ashley Caldarella completed the sacrifice bunt to move Guzman to third and after a pop fly by senior Sarah Williams for the second out, Guzman scored on a wild pitch. In the top of the fifth Williams became just the fourth player in school history with nine home runs in a season with a lead off solo shot that gave the Lions a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the sixth Mary took advantage of two bases loaded walks, an error on the Lions' third baseman, an infield single, and a two RBI single up the middle for six runs (five unearned) for the come from behind win.

Senior Ashley Lutz (8-9) suffered the loss going six innings allowing six runs, one earned, on seven hits with two walks and seven strike outs. Sophomore Abi Corbett went 2-for-2 at the plate and reached via a walk for a perfect 1.000 on base percentage for the game.

Game Two
Augustana (11-8) scored in the first inning on a ground out to short stop in a bases loaded situation. The Vikings loaded the bases twice in the opening frame but only managed that one run. Augie scored again in the fifth taking advantage on a Southern error for the 2-0 win, despite the Lions turning three double plays, which tied the single game record. The last time Southern turned three double plays was back on April 19, 2005 against then Missouri-Rolla now Missouri S&T.

Guzman pitched the complete game for the Lions allowing just the two runs, one earned, on four hits with a pair of strike outs. Southern out hit the Vikings 5-4 with senior Alana Hester, Corbett, junior Sydney Fry, Williams, and Guzman collecting the five hits amid the snowy conditions.

Up Next
The Lions were scheduled to start their final day at the Apple Market Classic against 16th ranked Winona State at 11 a.m. but Mother Nature again has forced the start time back two hours due to cold temps in the forecast. Southern will close the AMC with Concordia-St. Paul now at 5 p.m.
