St. Joseph, Mo. -- Hayden Steele had six RBIs,
Jesse Rall had two home runs and
Cody Hutchinson took a no-hitter into the sixth inning as the 21st ranked Missouri Southern Baseball team won 14-2 in seven innings today at Missouri Western.
Southern (14-4, 6-4 MIAA) was led by Steele's six RBIs in the game as the St. Joseph native went 3-for-3 with three doubles. The three doubles is second-most in a single game at Missouri Southern. Rall went 3-for-5 with a pair of home runs, driving in four and scoring three times. The two home runs is also second-most in a single game in MSSU history.
Chris Hoffman went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI, while
Jacob Bryant was 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
Richie Gorski and
Tyler Sutherland had two hits each, with both scoring twice and Sutherland driving in a run.
Brett Graham and
Jackson Cain had a hit each, with Graham picking up an RBI.
Hutchinson went six innings, striking out nine and walking just one, while taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning.
Matt Harvey threw a scoreless seventh, striking out two.
Western (14-7, 6-4 MIAA) got two RBIs from David Glaude as he, Landon Mason and Jeremy Alvarado had a hit each.
The Lions got things started in the first as Gorski and Bryant led off the game with a single. Gorski went to third on a fielder's choice and then scored on a balk. Southern picked up four runs in the third when Rall hit home run number one and Steele cleared the bases with a double.
Southern plated two more in the fifth on another Steele double and the Lions scored five runs in the sixth to break the game open. Rall had an RBI single, and Southerland added an RBI double, as well. Graham added a sacrifice fly and Hoffman singled to left to score Sutherland. After a Cain single, Steele added double number three of the afternoon to score Hoffman.
The Lions scored two more runs in the top of the seventh on Rall's second homer of the game.
The two teams will be back at it tomorrow afternoon in game two of the series. First pitch is slated for 1 pm.
