Durant, Okla. - The Missouri Southern Softball Lions (2-4) dropped their final two games at the Southeastern Regional Invitational Sunday afternoon at the Durant Multi-Sports Complex 3-1 to Henderson State and 7-5 to Oklahoma Christian.
Game OneHenderson State got on the board first in the home half of the opening inning as they took advantage of a Lions' error when Olivia Trapp singled home two runs, one unearned. The Reddies tacked on another run in the bottom of the second following another Southern error before the Lions would answer in the top of the third. Freshman
Kylie Wesbrooks singled up the middle on the very first pitch of the inning and moved to second on a ground out by junior
Sarah Morrison. Senior
Alana Hester did her job in moving Wesbrooks to third with a ground out to the shortstop before sophomore
Abi Corbett singled home Wesbrooks and then advanced to second on a throwing error by the shortstop. Southern would not get another runner past second base for the remaining four innings as they lost 3-1 to Henderson State.
Southern managed four hits against the Reddies' pitching with Corbett, Wesbrooks, senior Dru Coleman and freshman Angel Badalamenti collecting the four.Senior
Ashley Lutz got the start in the circled for the Lions going five innings allowing three runs, one earned, on five hits with two strike outs. Freshman
Taurean Guzman pitched the sixth inning holding the Reddies hitless with one strike out.
Game TwoIn the final game at the Southeastern Regional Invitational the Lions faced Oklahoma Christian for a second time, on day one Southern came away with a 9-3 win over the Eagles.This time the Eagles took advantage of three Lions' errors as they scored just three earned runs to down Southern 7-5. OC got the scoring started in the third when catcher Niki Davidson's ground ball to short with bases loaded went through the glove of the shortstop to plate two unearned runs. Bridget White then singled down the left field line scoring Davidson and Madison Nordyke as she went to third on a fielding error by the right fielder. The Eagles added another run in the fourth with a solo shot from Kirsten Scott to left center but the Lions started clawing their way back in the home half of the fifth. Freshman
Ashley Caldarella took a 2-0 pitch to center field for a lead off single and Badalamenti followed that up with a 2-2 single to left. Both runners advanced on the ground out by Wesbrooks with Caldarella scoring on an infield single by Morrison to make it 5-1 Oklahoma Christian. The Eagles got that run back in the top of the sixth before seeing an offensive explosion by the Lions in the home half. Sophomore
Myranda Stewart drew a one out walk and scored when senior
Dru Coleman took a 3-2 pitch down the right field line for a double. Coleman moved to third on a ground out to first by Caldarella and scored on a Badalamenti single to right on a 2-2 pitch. After a pitching change for Oklahoma Christian senior
Sarah Williams took a 2-2 pitch over the left center field wall to make it 6-5 OC. The Eagles pushed across an insurance run in the top of the seventh with a double down the left field line and a single up the middle to make it 7-5.
The Lions sprayed 10 hits against Oklahoma Christian with Corbett going 3-for-4, Badalamenti and Morrison added two each and Williams had the 2 RBIs with the home run.
Sophomore
Kali' Hodson got the start inside the circled for the Lions giving up seven runs, three earned, on nine hits with no walks and four strike outs in 6.2 innings of work. Guzman pitched the final out for the Lions getting a strike out.
On The DayCorbett led the Lions going 4-for-7 at the plate with a RBI while Badalamenti finished 3-for-6 with a RBI and a run scored. Morrison and Coleman each finished at .400 with Coleman and Williams proving the two extra base hits. Lutz led the pitching staff with a 1.40 ERA going her five innings with only one earned run.
For the WeekendCaldarella led the Lions with a .313 average (5-for-16) with one double, one home run, and four RBIs. Williams led Southern in slugging percentage with an .889, belting three home runs and gathering five RBIs. Coleman added four RBIs for the Lions' offense with her three run home run against the host Southeastern Oklahoma on Saturday and her RBI double on Sunday.
Hodson entered the final day with a 0.00 ERA and finished with a 1.34 going 1-1 on the weekend and throwing a complete game no hitter against Arkansas Tech Saturday night. In 15.2 innings of work she allowed seven runs, three earned, and struck out 11 hitters. Lutz pitched 16.2 innings allowing 11 runs, eight earned, on 14 hits with 13 Ks.
