Joplin, Mo. - The Missouri Southern Softball Lions swept visiting Missouri S&T Lady Miners Saturday afternoon 5-2 and 6-1 at Lea Kungle Field.
Game OneSouthern (7-6) scored first in the opening game of the twin bill in the bottom of the second inning as freshman
Angel Badalamenti scored on senior
Sarah Williams' sacrifice fly to right field. Missouri S&T (0-8) tied the game in the top of the fourth when Hannah Franceschini scored on a wild pitch and then took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth on a RBI single by Lori Badalamenti. The Lions took the lead back for good in the bottom of the frame as Williams led off with a four pitch walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from fellow senior
Dru Coleman. A single up the middle by freshman
Kylie Wesbrooks put runners on the corners and another double steal from the Lions scored Williams to make it 2-2. Senior
Alana Hester doubled home Wesbrooks and then scored herself following a passed ball and an errant throw by the Missouri S&T catcher. Southern tacked on one more run in the bottom of the sixth as Williams doubled home junior
Sydney Fry for the 5-2 final.
Fry finished the game 2-for-3 from the plate with a run scored and Williams was 1-for-1 with a run scored and two RBIs. Senior
Ashley Lutz (2-3) pitched the complete game for the Lions allowing just two earned runs on seven hits with two strike outs.
Game TwoIn the "night cap" Southern struck in the bottom of the first following a lead off single to center by Hester and stole second. Sophomore
Abi Corbett scored Hester on an infield single that stopped dead in the middle of the Missouri S&T pitcher and catcher. Badalamenti got in on the RBI parade in the third with a single up the middle that scored fellow freshman
Ashley Caldarella to make it 2-0 Lions. Southern added one more run in the fourth with Williams scoring on another Corbett infield single. Missouri S&T scored their lone run of game two in the top of the fifth on a RBI single to third base by Monica Weiss. The bottom of the fifth saw the Lions push across three more runs on RBIs from Coleman (2) and Hester.
Corbett went 3-for-4 at the plate in game two with 2 RBIs and Coleman finished 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs. Sophomore
Kali' Hodson (3-2) got the complete game win allowing just one run, earned, on eight hits with three strike outs.
On The DayWesbrooks went 2-for-3 on the day with a run scored while Coleman finished 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs. Williams, Corbett, and Hester each had two RBIs and Fry finished the day 4-for-7 at the dish and scored three runs.
