Joplin, Mo. - On a night where the Missouri Southern Women's Soccer program honored their four seniors it was only fitting that a senior provided the game winning goal as the Lions defeated Southwest Baptist 1-0 Friday night at Fred G. Hughes Stadium at the Robert W. Plaster Sports Complex.
It was senior
Hannah Cook who drew a foul inside the box in the 14th minute and converted on her second career PK, both against Southwest Baptist (0-16, 0-10 MIAA), that gave Missouri Southern (4-10-2, 1-8-1 MIAA) the 1-0 win. The Lions held the advantage in shots in the opening half 4-2 and they held a 3-0 advantage in corners.Â
In the second half, Southwest Baptist turned the tables in shots with an 8-5 advantage that also gave SBU the 10-9 overall advantage in shots. Both SBU's Makayla Hussong and Southern's freshman
Luz Galindo played all 90 minutes in the net with each recording a save in the first half and three in the second for a total of four on the night.
Sophomore
Bailey North, freshman
Ashton Denham, and sophomore
Jazzleen Wharry led the Lions with two shots each, both North and Denham's two shots were on goal. Cook finished with the one goal with freshman
Tayler LePage and sophomore
Elizabeth Saavedra each adding a shot.
The Lions will return to action on Sunday as they travel to Central Oklahoma with a 1 p.m. kick off.
