Jefferson City, Mo. - The Missouri Southern men's basketball team saw another record fall tonight as the Lions took out Lincoln 85-67 inside Jason Gym in Jefferson City.
Southern (11-7, 8-4 MIAA) got 29 points and 14 rebounds from
Taevaunn Prince as the senior went 7-14 from the field, including 13-16 from the free throw line. The 13 free throws give Prince 188 this season, surpassing his school-record mark of 182 set last year. The 29 points tonight give him 987 in his career, just 13 from 1,000.
Charlie Brown scored 19 points and added eight rebounds, while
Austin Wright had 15 points on 3-7 from long-range. Wright now has 228 three pointers in his career.
Bruce Marshall had 13 points, five rebounds and four blocks in 29 minutes of play.
Lincoln (11-7, 7-5 MIAA) was led by Anthony Virdue who scored 32 points on 12-29 shooting.
Both teams traded baskets early on in the first half, but the Lions took a 10-8 lead on a three from Marshall with 14:02 left. A jumper from Brown with 9:19 left in the half capped off a 14-3 run by the Lions and gave Southern a 22-11 lead.
The lead was ten (24-14) after a jumper from
Blaine Miller, but a bucket from the Blue Tigers' O'Shai Clark cut the Lions' lead to five (33-28). A pair of free throws from Brown with 40 seconds left made the score 37-28, Lions, but a free throw from Lincoln would provide the halftime tally (37-29).
A three from Brown at the 16:17 mark of the second half gave the Lions a 48-39 lead, but five-straight points from the Blue Tigers made the score 48-44 and forced a Southern timeout. Three-straight free throws from Prince gave the Lions a 60-47 lead with 11 minutes to go, and another pair from Prince made the score 62-49.
A three-pointer from Wright with 7:35 to go in the game gave the Lions a 16-point advantage (72-56), and a pair of free throws from Prince with under 30 seconds left gave the final tally.
The Lions shot 55 percent in the game and limited the Blue Tigers to just 38 percent from the field. Southern made 50 percent of its three-pointers and 86 percent of its free throws. The Lions had a 38-30 advantage on the boards and scored 13 points off of nine LU turnovers. Southern led the game for more than 36 of the 40 minutes.
The Lions will be back in action this Saturday as Southern travels to Lindenwood. Tip off from St. Charles is slated for 3:00 pm.
