Prince Surpasses 1,000 Points, But Men's Basketball Falls 69-68 At Lindenwood

St. Charles, Mo. - A late comeback by Lindenwood lifted LU over the Missouri Southern men's basketball team 69-68 today inside Hyland Arena in St. Charles.

Southern (11-8, 8-5 MIAA) was led by Taevaunn Prince as the senior scored 29 points on 12-17 from the field and 5-6 shooting from the free throw line. Prince also went over the 1,000-point mark in his career and now has 1,016. Austin Wright scored 15 points on 5-7 shooting from long-range.

Lindenwood (13-6, 9-4 MIAA) was led by Cory Arentsen with 24 points on 10-11 shooting. Sam Mader scored 21.

Southern opened up a 7-3 lead at the 15:40 mark of the first half after a jumper from Prince. They led 22-12 with 8:13 to go a three-point play from Prince upped the Southern lead to ten.

A three-pointer from Wright with 50 seconds left in the half pushed the Southern lead to 16 (39-23), but Lindenwood closed on a 4-0 run to make the halftime score 39-27, Southern.

Southern scored four-straight points to open the second half, a layup from both Isaac Kreuer and Charlie Brown to go up 43-29 with 19 minutes left. A layup from Lindenwood's Chandler Diekvoss with 15:49 left cut the lead to just five (45-40), but Southern pushed its lead back to ten (55-45) after a three from Wright.

Lindenwood again got to within five, this time at 55-50 with 10:43 to go after a pair of free throws from LJ McIntosh and cut the lead to four (57-53) after a three from Arentsen with 8:58 left.

Southern went on an 8-0 run to lead by 12 (65-53), but Lindenwood answered back with a 10-0 run to cut the MSSU lead to just two (65-63) with four minutes to go. Both teams scored just a bucket each over the next two minutes and Southern had a 67-65 lead with 1:12 left when Lindenwood called a timeout.

Coming out of the timeout, Lindenwood tied the game at 67 on a jumper from Arentsen with 56 seconds left and LU fouled Southern on the next play. Prince would make one-of-two free throws to push Southern to a 68-67 lead with 27 seconds left. After a pair of missed free throws from Lindenwood, Arentsen got the offensive rebound and put the shot back to give LU a 69-68 lead with eight seconds left, forcing a Southern timeout.

Southern set up a play, but a Brown shot was blocked and MSSU could not get off another shot.

Southern shot 45 percent from the field and 83 percent from the free throw line in the game.

The Lions will be back in action this Wednesday night when Southern travels to Maryville to take on Northwest Missouri. Tip off from Bearcat Arena is slated for 7:30 pm.
