Volleyball drops final pair at Washburn

Topeka, Kan. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team went to five against South Dakota Mines and was swept by Augustana today in the final day of the Washburn Invitational.

Against South Dakota Mines (2-1) the Lions won set one and four, forcing a fifth set, but Southern (0-4) dropped the finale and lost 3-2. Individual set scores were 30-28, 17-25, 20-25, 25-23 and 13-15.

Both teams traded points throughout the first set and the Rockers went ahead 24-23, but a kill from Monica White tied the set. The Lions went up 26-25 on a kill from Alyx Gepford and the set was tied at 27 and 28, before kills from Callie Whetstone and Bridgette Jaeger gave the set to the Lions.

After Mines took sets two and three, the Lions took the fourth set to force a fifth and deciding frame. Southern went up 8-2 and again was up 10-4 after an ace from Jaeger. Mines cut the lead to two at 12-10, but that would be as close as they would get with the Lions leading troughout.

The Lions went down 7-0 in the fifth set and trailed 10-5, but fought back to get within one after an ace from Gepford cut the SD Mines lead to one (13-12). However, the Rockers scored two of the final three points to take the match.

Jaeger led the Lions with 17 kills and 15 digs, while Abby Finder dished out 43 assists and added 12 digs. Katie Wiele had a team-high 22 digs, while Lauren Darby added 14 digs. Whetstone had nine kills and four blocks, while White and Gepford had seven kills each.

In the Lions' match with Augustana (3-1), the set scores were 23-25, 18-25 and 19-25.

Darby had 11 kills in the match, while Finder added 26 assists. Wiele had 12 digs, while Jaeger and Gepford had seven kills each.

Southern will be back in action next weekend when the team travels to Russellville, Ark. to compete in the Arkansas Tech Tournament.
