Box Score 2 St. Joseph, Mo. - Southern softball (5-19) dropped their final two games of the MWSU Apple Market Classic on Sunday afternoon in St. Joseph 3-1 to Upper Iowa and 3-0 to #24 Augustana (S.D.).
Game One
Southern struck first in the top of the first as Alana Hester led off with a single up the middle but was thrown out stealing second. Abi Corbett then reached on an infield single to second base and advanced to second on Michala Wood's single to left. Kathryn Goins-Osburn advanced both runners on a ground out to third base and Corbett scored on an infield single down the third base line by Brooke Swadley.
Upper Iowa got the run back in the home half of the first as they scored on a fielder's choice back to the pitcher. UIU would add two more in the sixth as they took advantage of three hits and a Lions' error for the 3-1 win.
Kali' Hodson (0-9) went the distance for Southern as she pitched six innings allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits with five strike outs and no walks.
Game Two
In the final game of the MWSU Apple Market Classic #24 Augustana (S.D.) struck first in the bottom half of the first with a three run homerun down the right field line. That would be all that Augie needed as Southern managed just two hits, both singles by Myranda Stewart and Sarah Williams, against the Augie pitching.
Shelby Mitchell (1-2) got her first start and complete game of the season as she held #24 Augustana to just those three runs on nine hits with one strike out and one walk.
On the Day
Corbett led the offensive attack for Southern on the day as she finished 2-for-6 (.333) with a run scored. Stewart finished at .250 on the day (1-for-4).
Hodson and Mitchell both pitched complete games combining for just six runs, five earned, with six strike outs and just one walk.
On the Weekend
For the tournament Goins-Osburn finished .286 (4-for-14) with two RBIs and four walks. Corbett and Wood both finished at .200 (3-for-15) each with a run scored and three walks combined.
Ashley Lutz was the big winner in the circle as she picked up both Southern's wins with a 0.00 ERA pitching nine and two thirds innings allowing one unearned run on four hits with three strike outs.

The Lions will be back in action on Tuesday March 24 as they host William Jewell for a non-conference double header with first pitch scheduled for 4pm.
