Lions Softball Drops Heartbreakers to Fort Hays State

Hays, Kan. - The Missouri Southern Softball team (1-13, 0-2 MIAA) dropped a pair of one run games to Fort Hays State (9-8, 4-2 MIAA) Saturday afternoon 7-6 and 3-2 in 8 innings.

Game One

In the first game FHSU struck first as they scored three runs in the third before the Lions would answer in the fourth as Abi Corbett got things started by reaching on a error by the FHSU third baseman. Michala Wood would double home Corbett and then score on Kathryn Goins-Osburn's single to center. Dru Coleman would then single to right and move Goins-Osburn to third before Myranda Stewart would doulbe home Goins-Osburn and move Coleman to third. Brooke Swadley's single down the right field line scored Coleman to give the Lions the 4-3 lead.

Fort Hays State would get two runs in the home half as they scored on a RBI ground out and a double to center. Southern would tie it back up in the fifth as Alana Hester would score on Coleman's single to left to tie the game at 5-5.

The Tigers would retake the lead again in the sixth as they plated two runs. The Lions has bases loaded with one out before Sarah Williams would draw a walk to score Corbett. FHSU would get out of the inning as the Lions hit into two fielder's choices.

Kali' Hodson (0-6) got the start in the circle going five innings allowing seven runs, six earned, on seven hits with three strike outs. Shelby Mitchell pitched one inning in relief allowing just one FHSU hit.

Game Two

In the nightcap the Lions struck first as Stewart led off the second inning with a double to right and scored on an error by FHSU's short stop. Southern would add one more run in the sixth as Coleman led off with a single to center, Ashley Lutz would pinch run for Coleman. Stewart walked and Williams executed a sacrifice bunt to move Lutz and Stewart to second and thrid. Lindsey Gorham would walk to load the bases and Swadley, pinch hitting, would rope a RBI single to right to score Lutz to give the Lions a 2-0 lead.

Southern would take the 2-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh before Fort Hays State would push two runs across with two outs to send it to extra innings. In the extra frame FHSU sat the Lions down 1-2-3 and would score the winning run off a double to right center and single to center.

Lutz (1-6) would go the distance in the circle for the Lions as she threw 7 1/3 innings allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits with five strike outs.

On the Day

Coleman and Swadley went .500, Coleman was 3-for-6 and Swadley 2-for-4. Swadley was also the Lions' leader with two RBIs.

Up Next

The Lions will be back in action Saturday as they take on the Lopers of Nebraska-Kearney with first pitch scheduled for noon from Kearney, Neb.
