Mankato, Minn. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team played a school-record 14 innings and Brett Abell tied a school record with 11 innings pitched, but a safety-squeeze in the bottom of th 14th, lifted fifth-ranked Minnesota State over the Lions 1-0 in the first round of the 2013 NCAA Division II Central Region Tournament. 

The Lions (34-21) picked up a stellar pitching performance from Abell as the senior from Miami, Okla. went 11 innings, striking out 11, alloing just five hits, and walking two to earn the no-decision. His 11 strikeouts give him 116 on the season, extending his school record for single-season strikeouts. He now has 200 in his career, just six from tying the career record for strikeouts at Missouri Southern. 

Sam Ryan went 4-6 in the game, while Dane Kolkmeyer had a pair of hits. Michael McCoy, Dallas Burke, Tee Helsel, and Nick Doughty had a hit each in the game. 

Ryan Bates threw the final two and two thirds of an inning, striking out two and walking one. He moved his record to 8-3 on the season. 

Minnesota State's Jason Hoppe went ten and two thirds of an inning, shutting out the Lions. He scattered seven hits, and struck out seven, while walking just two. Mahlon Zimmerman came in and threw the final three and a third innings to pick up his sixth win of the season. 

With the loss, the Lions will face Central Missouri at noon on Friday in an elimination game for both teams.
