Baseball sweeps a double-header from College of the Ozarks

Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team swept a double-header today from visiting College of the Ozarks, winning game one 5-4 and game two, 5-2. 

Southern (21-11) had pitcher by committee today as David Reese started in game one. Reese went three innings and allowed four hits with no earned runs. Brett Abell pitched two innings, striking out three and walking none, while allowing just one earned run. Drew Noble threw an inning to earn the win, while Bo Bergen picked up his second save of the season. Noble moves to 4-1 on the season. 

The Bobcats (12-16) led 4-1 going into the bottom of the sixth, before the Lions exploded for four runs in the inning. Nick Doughty drove in Will Wagner for the first run of the inning, before Michael McCoy drove in Dane Kolkmeyer with a single. Keith Freeman and McCoy would both score unearned runs in the inning. 

McCoy was 2-3 with a run and an RBI, while Kolkmeyer and Zack Steadman had a hit each. 

A four-run sixth inning in game two helped the Lions to the win in the nightcap. Ryan Bates started for Southern and went three innings, allowing just two hits and striking out three with no walks. Payton Walker threw two innings, while Bo Bergen threw an inning and a third to pick up the win. Josh Engler picked up his first save of the year, striking out his only batter faced in the seventh. 

The Lions scored a run in the third on a sacrifice fly from Sam Ryan, scoring Tee Helsel. C of O scored a run in the fourth to tie it up, but the Lions scored four in the sixth to break the game open. Wagner singled home Ryan for the first run of the inning and Doughty singled, scoring Wagner. McCoy drove in a run on a bases-loaded walk and Thomas Wilson added a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Freeman. 

Wilson went 2-3 with an RBI, while McCoy had a hit, a run and an RBI. Wagner drove in a run and scored once, while Doughty had an RBI, as well. 

The Lions will be back in action on Saturday afternoon with a 2 pm double-header at home against Washburn.
