Southern baseball splits an MIAA double-header against Fort Hays

Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team split an MIAA double-header today against visiting Fort Hays State, dropping game one 7-6, but winning the night cap 14-3 in seven innings. 

Southern (7-4, 3-4 MIAA) fell down 5-0 after two innings in game one, but scored a single run in each of the third, fourth and sixth innings to get with in two runs, 5-3, going into the seventh. 

Dallas Burke had an RBI single scoring Thomas Wilson in the third, and Dane Kolkmeyer added a home run in the fourth. Tee Helsel doubled to right center to start the sixth and scored on a single from Nick Doughty

Michael McCoy reached on an error to start the seventh and Burke walked behind him. After an out, Will Wagner singled to score McCoy. After another out, Doughty singled home both Burke and Zack Steadman who was running for Wagner to put the Lions on top 6-5. 

Fort Hays (7-6, 4-5 MIAA) had singles from Kelton Rule and Jay Sanders in the seventh before the Lions recorded the second out of the inning. A walk and a hit by pitch scored the tying run and a single from Sam Thorton scored Jay Sanders for the winning run. 

Doughty went 3-4 with three RBIs in the game, while Burke had two hits, a run and an RBI. Kolkmeyer had a home run, while Burke, Helsel and Doughty all doubled. 

Brett Abell started the game and Drew Noble, Stephen Vaughn, Bo Bergen and Ryan Bates threw in relief. 

Game two was all Southern. The Lions scored three runs in each of the first two innings highlighted by RBI singles from Doughty and Helsel in the first, as well as RBI doubles from McCoy and Burke and an RBI single from Doughty in the second. 

Hays scored two runs in the second and a run in the fourth, but the Lions answered back with eight runs over the sixth and seventh to invoke the ten-run rule. 

Doughty went 3-4 with a pair of RBIs and three runs scored in the game. Burke was 3-3 with three runs and two RBIs, while Helsel went 3-4 with a pair of runs and RBIs each, and Thomas Wilson went 3-5 with three RBIs and one run. THe Lions had doubles from McCoy, Burke, Wagner and Wilson, while Burke added a homer. 

David Reese went the distance, throwing all seven, allowing three runs, while striking out six and walking just one. 

Southern will be back in action on Wednesday afternoon with a 1 pm double-header against Pittsburg State at Joe Becker Stadium. The game will be part of the Sonic Trophy Series.
