Tahlequah, Okla. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team split a pair of MIAA games at Northeastern State today, winning game one 5-4, but dropping game two, 7-3.

Southern (11-11, 7-9 MIAA) went on top early in game one, leading 3-0 after three innings. The Lions scored two in the first when Shaun Hoover tripled home Nick Doughty and Michael McCoy singled home Hoover.

The Lions added another run in the third on an RBI single from Tee Helsel, scoring Sam Ryan and would plate another run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly from Will Wagner, scoring Dallas Burke.

Northeastern State (12-11, 12-11 MIAA) tied the game with four runs in their half of the fifth and the game would remain tied and go into extra innings when the Lions scored the game-winner in the top of the eighth. Nick Doughty was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a wild pitch. After a walk to Hoover, a wild pitch put runners at second and third for McCoy and he drove home Doughty with a sacrifice fly.

Brett Abell started for the Lions and went four and a third, striking out three. Payton Walker threw two and two thirds of an inning in relief of one-hit ball to earn the win, while David Reese threw a perfect eighth to pick up his third save of the season.

Ryan went 3-4 with a run scored, while McCoy was 2-4 with two driven in. Burke, Doughty, Hoover and Keith Freeman scored a run each in the game.

In game two, Northeastern State jumped out to a 6-1 lead after four innings and held on for the win.

Ryan had an RBI single in the third to score McCoy, while an RBI single from Burke and a sacrifice fly from Ryan in the fifth provided the Lions with their three runs in the game.

Reese started game two and went three and two thirds, striking out three and walking none. Walker, Bo Bergen and Kanon Hoover threw in relief.

McCoy went 3-4 with two runs scored, while Thomas Wilson, Burke, Ryan and Dane Kolkmeyer had a hit each. Ryan added two RBIs.

The Lions will be back at it with a series with Lincoln this Saturday and Sunday at Joe Becker Stadium in Joplin.
