Southern baseball drops both ends of double-header at Lindenwood

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

St. Charles, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team fell in both ends of a double-header today as the Lions opened up MIAA play at Lindenwood. Southern lost game one by the score of 7-0 and game two 3-2 in 11 innings.

The Lions (4-2, 0-2 MIAA) ran into a strong pitching performance from Lindenwood's (2-4, 2-0 MIAA) Dylan Terrell as he went the distance to limit the Lions to just four hits. Dallas Burke went 2-3 in the game, while Dane Kolkmeyer and Shaun Hoover had a hit each.

Brett Abell started for the Lions and went two and a third innings. Kanon Hoover, Stephen Vaughn and Jacob Lux pitched in relief for Southern.

In game two, Lindenwood got on top first with a run in the second, but the Lions answered back with two runs in the third. With two outs, Burke walked and moved to second on a balk. Sam Ryan then doubled him home and Tee Helsel was walked to put runners at first and second. Nick Doughty then singled home Ryan to put the Lions up 2-1.

Lindenwood added a run in the fifth inning to tie the game at two, and both teams went scoreless for the next six and a half innings as the game went into extra innings.

Southern threatened with runners in each of the 10th and 11th innings, but couldn't push a run across.

Lindenwood put the lead-off runner on base in the bottom of the 11th, but Vaughn, who had started the inning, got the next two batters to pop out. A single from Lindenwood's Eddie Sutton put runners on the corners and brought Payton Walker in to relieve for Southern. Sutton then stole second and a walk loaded the bases. Lindenwood's Nathan Prindle then walked to force in the winning run.

Ryan and Doughty both went 4-5 in the game with an RBI. Ryan scored once, while Burke added a run of his own. Shaun Hoover had two hits and Michael McCoy added one of his own.

David Reese started and went seven and two thirds, allowing one unearned run, while striking out four and walking none. Bo Bergen had a scoreless inning of relief and Vaughn and Walker finished up the game.

The Lions and Lindenwood will finish up the final game of the three-game series tomorrow afternoon with a first pitch slated for 1 pm.
