Dustdevils Strike First, Outlast Lions

Burkburnett, Texas – The Missouri Southern Lions Softball team (0-4) got stung for three runs in the bottom of the first inning and couldn't mount a comeback as the Texas A&M International Dustdevils (4-11) came away with a 13-2 victory in the first day at Midwestern State University's Holiday Inn Classic.

The Lions got on the board in the second inning, down 3-0, as senior Brooke Hurley led off with a walk.  Hurley then scored on the next batter as fellow senior Lydia Niemegeers tripled down the left field line.  Niemegeers would score two batters later on a ground out by freshman Brooke Smith.

Sophomore Haley Pypes (0-2) got the start inside the circle for the Lions and a total of five pitchers saw action in the game.  Sophomore Shelby Romines held the Dustdevils scoreless in her inning and 2/3 of work, allowing just two hits.

Southern will be back in action Saturday afternoon as they face the host Mustangs of Midwestern State University at 1pm and MIAA foe Fort Hays State at 3pm.
