13th ranked Washburn scores 20 unanswered in the fourth to win 30-14

Box Score

Joplin, Mo. -- After a one hour, 19-minute delay to start the game, the Missouri Southern Lions had a 14-10 lead in the fourth quarter over 13th ranked Washburn, but the Ichabods scored 20 unanswered points to come-from-behind and defeat the Lions, 30-14 at Fred G. Hughes Stadium tonight in the home opener for Southern.

The Lions (0-2, 0-2 MIAA) held Washburn to just 93 yards rushing (the second sub 100 yard rushing amount allowed this year), but Washburn (3-0, 2-0 MIAA) quarterback Dane Simoneau threw for 274 yards and four touchdowns to lift the Ichabods over the Lions.

Simoneau had 200 yards passing in the second half and all four of his touchdown passes.

Southern quarterback Collin Howard was 19-30 with 127 yards and one touchdown, while he rushed for 35 yards, as well. Steven Sumpter had 14 carries and 58 yards, while Kyle Webster rushed five times for 27 yards and a score. Landon Zerkel caught seven passes for 51 yards, while Sumpter and Ne'Ronte Threatt both caught four passes. Threatt had the lone touchdown reception.

Freshman punter Cody Montee had seven punts for 269 yards and an average of 38.4, including a long of 62 yards and two inside the 20.

Defensively, Demon Haire led the Lions with nine tackles, one for a loss and an interception. Brandon Williams had six tackles, 4.5 for a loss of 25 yards, including two sacks and a quarterback hurry. Aaron Hall had seven tackles, while CJ Broades, Brian Rodgers and Maurlon Bembry all had six tackles.

Washburn started the scoring with a 29-yard field goal from Jeremy Linn with 7:16 left in the first quarter. But a five yard touchdown pass from Howard to Threatt capped off an 11 play, 99-yard drive lasting 4:44 that put the Lions on top 7-3 as Southern would take that lead into the locker room.

Washburn scored to go ahead with just 1:05 left in the third quarter when Simoneau hooked up with DeJuan Beard for a 19-yard score that put the Ichabods up 10-7. The Lions then answered with a two-yard rush and score from Webster that capped off a seven play, 50-yard scoring drive to go ahead 14-10 with 14:23 left in the fourth quarter.

From then on, it was all Washburn as the Ichabods scored 20 unanswered points, all on Simoneau touchdown passes, to put away the game.

Southern will be back in action a week from tonight, taking on Lincoln University in the Ameren Gateway Classic. The game will take place at 11 am in the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis.
