Emporia, Kan. - Junior Nicole Reed had a record setting performance inside the circle in the night cap as the Missouri Southern Lions (25-18, 8-6 MIAA) split with No. 14-ranked Emporia State Hornets.  The Lions  dropped game one 8-0 in five innings and won the night cap 4-0.

Game One

Juniors Brianna Fulkerson and Lydia Niemegeers provided the only hits for Missouri Southern in the opening game against Emporia state University, as the Hornets handed the Lions an 8-0 loss in five innings.

Senior Tiffany Bennett (4-10) suffered the loss for Southern as she gave up six runs on four hits and struck out two Hornets.

Game Two

Reed (19-5) needed just three strike outs to surpass former Lion Britany Hargis for the single season record, Reed managed to strike out four Hornets setting the new record at 169 and counting with four conference double headers remaining in the season.

Junior Breanna Volkmann led the way for Southern going 2-for-3 at the dish and scoring one run.  Volkmann connected for a triple in the first inning and then scored on a fielding error by the Hornets shortstop.  Junior Alysha Poteat hit a 2-run home run in the second knocking in sophomore Dawn Grass after Grass had walked to start the inning.  The Lions would then add an insurance run in the top of the seventh as junior Natalie Nelson doubled to right center and was moved to third base on a grounder by Niemegeers.  Nelson would then score on a single to left field by Fulkerson.

The Lions will travel to St. Joseph, Missouri tomorrow to tackle the Missouri Western Griffons in a MIAA double header.  First pitch Saturday is scheduled for 1pm.
