Pittsburg, Kan. - Missouri Southern senior
Brennan Benkert took home the title in the 10,000 meters tonight in
one of the closest finishes in meet history as the Lions competed
in day one of the 2010 MIAA Outdoor Track and Field
Championships.
Benkert won the 10k in a time of 31-13.96, while second place
Laban Sialo of Central Missouri finished just eight one
hundredths of a second behind Benkert. Benkert earned All-MIAA
status for his finish.
Kevin Wright qualified for the finals in three different events
as he finished fifth in the 110 hurdles, as well as the 200m and
the 400m. Also qualifying for the finals of the 400m was D'Angelo Wood and Andrew Wright. Jordan Patton qualified for the finals of
the 100 and 200 meters, while Aki Nummela is in the finals of the
800m.
Taylor McClelland earned All-MIAA status in the long jump,
placing third with a distance of 23-06.75, while Jerry Jones was
15th. Michael Jurgens and Corey Shumate placed fourth and seventh
in the pole, both earning points for the Lions, while Andrew Gassen
was 11th in the javelin.
Kyle Hancock and Tyler Burgess placed 13th and 15th,
respectively in the hammer throw.
The Lions are in fifth after day one with 22.50 points. Central
Missouri is first followed by Pitt State, Emporia State, Fort Hays,
Southern, Northwest Missouri, Truman and Southwest
Baptist.
The Lions will finish up the meet tomorrow morning.
