Charlotte, NC -- Brennan Benkert
qualified for the finals and set a new school record in the 1,500
meters, while the 4x100m relay team set a new school mark, as well
in day one of the 2010 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field
Championships held at Johnson C. Smith University in
Charlotte.
Benkert finished fifth in the prelims, breaking his previous
school record with a time of 3:46.72. His previous record of
3:48.73 was set this year at the Arkansas Twilight. He will race in
the finals on Saturday. He also placed 15th tonight in the 10k with
a time of 32:02.65.
The 4x100 meter relay team of Maurlon Bembry, Jordan Patton,
Jacob Khan and Andrew Wright qualified sixth and broke their own
school record in the process with a time of 40.66. The previous
mark of 40.93 was set this year at the Bob Laptad/Bill Williams
Invite.
In other action, Jordan
Patton failed to qualify for the finals in the 100m dash,
finishing just one hundredth of a second out of a place in the
finals.
The Lions still have two individuals and a relay team left to
compete on Saturday. Benkert will race in the finals of the 1,500
meters, while James
Coleman will compete in the discus. Southern's 4x100m relay
team will also be in action.
