Benkert and 4x100m relay team set records at day one of the 2010 Outdoor Nationals

Charlotte, NC -- Brennan Benkert qualified for the finals and set a new school record in the 1,500 meters, while the 4x100m relay team set a new school mark, as well in day one of the 2010 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte.

Benkert finished fifth in the prelims, breaking his previous school record with a time of 3:46.72. His previous record of 3:48.73 was set this year at the Arkansas Twilight. He will race in the finals on Saturday. He also placed 15th tonight in the 10k with a time of 32:02.65.

The 4x100 meter relay team of Maurlon Bembry, Jordan Patton, Jacob Khan and Andrew Wright qualified sixth and broke their own school record in the process with a time of 40.66. The previous mark of 40.93 was set this year at the Bob Laptad/Bill Williams Invite.

In other action, Jordan Patton failed to qualify for the finals in the 100m dash, finishing just one hundredth of a second out of a place in the finals.

The Lions still have two individuals and a relay team left to compete on Saturday. Benkert will race in the finals of the 1,500 meters, while James Coleman will compete in the discus. Southern's 4x100m relay team will also be in action.
