Benkert/Nummela go 1-2 in the 5k in opening night of John McDonnell

Fayetteville, Ark. -- Brennan Benkert and Aki Nummela finished first and second in the 5k tonight at the John McDonnell Invitational at the University of Arkansas. 

Benkert won the event in a time of 14:49.53, while Nummela was second with a time of 14:53.16. Nick Niggemann was fourth, while Sam Pogue was 11th. 

In other action, Tyler Burgess and Kyle Hancock were second and third in the men's hammer throw, while Emilie Mieseler won the women's hammer throw with a distance of 167 feet, eight inches and Nicole Green was fourth. 

The Lions will continue their weekend tomorrow competing at both Arkansas and Pittsburg State.
