Benkert wins the distance triple crown and earns high point honors at MIAA Championships

Joplin, Mo. -- Brennan Benkert won the title in the mile and the 3k, to go with his title in the 5k from yesterday and picked up high point honors at the 2010 MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships today at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center. 

The Lions, as a team, placed third overall with 89 points. Central Missouri took home the men's title with 137 points, followed by Pitt State with 114. Southern was third, followed by Emporia State, Southwest Baptist, Northwest Missouri, Fort Hays and Truman. 

In all, the Lions had 7 All-MIAA performances this weekend, led by multiple performances by Benkert (5k, 3k, Mile). 

Corey Reynolds and Chris Brown both tied for the top height today in the high jump, but Reynolds took home the title in a jump off. Both were named All-MIAA. Corey Shumate (3rd), earned All-MIAA honors in the pole vault, while Michael Juergens  and DJ Dunmire placed 5th and 6th. Shumate hit the same height as first and second place, but fellon fewer misses. 

In the shot put, Seth Hackney hit 52-09.25 and placed fourth, while Kyle Hancock and James Coleman were 10th and 11th in the shot. 

Jordan Patton earned All-MIAA honors with a third place finish in the 60 meter dash, placing just three one hundredths of a second off of the leader in one of the closest finishes in the event's recent history. 

Benkert, Aki Nummela and Mathis went 1st, 4th and 7th in the mile with Benkert just missing the MIAA record, but besting the building record and earning an automatic qualification to nationals with a 4:09.32. 

Benkert picked up his third All-MIAA honor and individual title with the 3k running a time of 8:33.12. Mathis was sixth, while Nick Niggemann placed 10th. 

Kevin Wright was fifth in the 400 meters, while the Lions' 4x400m relay team of Wright, Maurlon Bembry, Jordan Patton and DJ Bland placed fifth.
