Fayetteville, Ark. -- The Missouri Southern
men's track and field team picked up an NCAA automatic qualifying
mark and set a new Southern record in action at the final day of
the 2010 Tyson Invitational on the campus of the University of
Arkansas.
The Southern men's distance medley relay team of Dustin Dixon,
Kevin Wright, Aki Nummela and Brennan Benkert broke the school
record in the event that was previously set four years ago in this
very building. Ironically, Dixon, who ran the opening leg of the
event tonight, ran the anchor leg four years ago when the previous
record was set.
Dixon ran the opening 1200 meters in a time of 3:02.95 and
Wright followed that up with a 49.39 in the 400. Nummela ran a
1:54.01 800 meter leg and Benkert anchored the DMR with a 4:05.38
1600 meters. The team had a total time of 9:51.92 that beat the
previous Southern record by nearly four seconds. It is an automatic
qualifying mark and is tops in MIAA this year and ranks second-best
in Division II this season.
Corey Reynolds placed fifth in the high jump with a height of
6-6.75, while Seth Hackney and Kyle Hancock placed 13th and 19th,
respectively in the shot put.
The Lions will be back in action next weekend when they travel
to Warrensburg to compete in the Mule Relays.
