Joplin, Mo. - The Missouri
Southern baseball team completed a win from the night prior and
split a double-header with St. Cloud State today, losing 4-1 in the
first game, but coming from behind to win 8-7 in game two. Southern
took the suspended game 14-13.
Justin Beal came in to finish off the suspended game and struck
out three to earn the save and the Lions won 14-13 in a suspended
game. Drew Jenkins took the win in the game.
In the first game of the double-header, SCSU (6-3) got on top in
the first inning, scoring two early runs off of Beal who stayed in
to start the game. The Huskies had back-to-back singles to start
the game and both runners were sacrificed over before a single from
catcher Nate Hammes drove both in.
SCSU scored two more in the fourth to go up 4-0 and the
Lions would add a run off a fielder's choice from Justin Beal in
the sixth, but the Huskie's Tim Scott was solid on the mound,
allowing only one hit to the Lions.
The Lions returned the favor in game two, as Southern got on top
early with two runs in the second and three in the third to go up
5-0 after three.
Michael Zurmehly picked up a two-run double in the first,
scoring Zach Caldwell and Derek Ezell. The Lions scored three more
in the third. Jacob Taylor singled home Caldwell, and Zurmehly
would single home Taylor. Kenny Hart then tripled to right center
to score Zurmehly.
The Huskies, got even and scored seven runs in the top of the
sixth to surge ahead 7-5. Three hits and an error in the frame led
to the big inning.
Neither team scored in their next at bat leaving the Lions with
the bottom of the seventh to try and come back. Derek Ezell started
the inning with a single to center and Taylor followed suit with a
single through the right side. Both would advance a base on a wild
pitch and Hart walked to load the bases. The Huskies changed
pitchers but SCSU's Chris Koenig threw a wild pitch to score Ezell.
The Huskies then intentionally walked Beal to load the bases and
Tyler Tuthill hit a grounder to the right side to score Taylor and
tie the game at seven. Yesterday's hero, Trent Owens, who homered
in the eighth inning to give the Lions the go-ahead run, then came
through again and singled up the middle to score Hart for the
game-winner.
Zurmehly went 2-4 with three RBIs and a run scored, while Taylor
and Caldwell had two hits each. Taylor scored three times, Ezell
scored twice, and Caldwell and Hart scored a run each.
Carter Lance went five and a third innings in the start today,
allowing three earned runs and striking out two. Jenkins and
Garrett Groom pitched in relief, while Corey Wells got the win with
a perfect inning in the top of the seventh.
The two teams will finish up the series tomorrow (Feb. 15) with
a single, nine-inning game beginning at noon.
