Prior to Southern
Gaines prepped at Fulton High School under coaches Patrick Knipe and Janelle Harrison, earning four letters in basketball, track, and cross country. She was a four-time All-Conference honoree and one-time conference champion in cross country. On the track, Gaines earned three All-Conference selections in the 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs, winning conference titles in both events twice. She was also a two-time All-Conference selection in the 800-meter run and a conference champion in that event once. In basketball, Gaines was named first-team All-Conference twice and second-team once. She earned All-District honors twice in both cross country and basketball and was named All-State in the 1,600-meter run once.

Kayanna, the daughter of Sara and Kevin Gaines, is pursing a degree in Nursing at Southern.
