The 2023-24 season marks McMahon’s seventh season as an assistant coach for the Lions and second stint with Missouri Southern. In 2022-23, he returned to the MSSU Men's Basketball program after one year away from the school.

During his year off he was the Head Scout of Missouri for NxtPro Hoops.

In his first stint on the sidelines for the Green and Gold, McMahon spent five seasons with MSSU having started in the 2016-2017 season. During his first four seasons, the Lions averaged 22 wins, earned a berth in three-straight NCAA Tournaments and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen in 2019. During this time he also served three years as the Head Coach of the JV program and one year in administration as the Athletic Academic Support Specialist. He was elevated to the top assistant coach position at the start of the 2020-21 season in which the Lions went 13-10. During that season, he went 3-1 in his time as acting head coach. During his five years on the Southern bench he helped recruit and coach two All Americans and seven All-MIAA players.

A basketball and baseball standout at Jefferson City (Mo.) High, he earned All-State and All-District honors. He was a scholarship freshman member of the 2011-2012 Truman State University basketball team before a pre-season knee injury ended his college basketball career. He then transitioned into baseball where he was a starting pitcher for Truman State as a freshman and later as a relief pitcher for the University of Central Missouri where he helped lead the Mules to a 43-15 record, MIAA regular season and Tournament Championships, a Regional Championship, and an appearance in the Division II World Series.

McMahon graduated from the University of Central Missouri in May 2016 where he earned a degree in Sports Management along with a minor in Business Administration
