WICHITA, Kan. — Missouri Southern lost to Newman 3-1 on Friday at Fugate Gymnasium. Missouri Southern won the opening set 25-13 and used an 8-0 run to take a fourth-set lead after trailing by three, but the Jets took the final three sets.
MSSU is 6-9 overall and 1-3 in Mid-America Intercollegiate play. The Jets are 5-11 overall and 1-2 in Mid-America Intercollegiate play.
Addysen Alvis led the Lions with 13 kills and 15.0 points, adding nine digs, one ace and one solo block while hitting .314.
Brenna Weaver recorded a team-high 17 assists with seven digs and two service aces.
Abby Morris added 15 assists, seven digs and one service ace.
Kasey Goldberg collected a team-high 14 digs and added four assists with one ace.
Southern broke open the first set with an 8-0 run, turning a 6-5 lead into a 14-5 advantage as
Brenna Weaver served seven straight points and
Addysen Alvis,
Epifania Salamasina,
Kenzie Jones and
Grace Gardner all contributed at the net. Earlier, the Lions started quickly with a Jones kill, a Jets attack error and an
Addysen Alvis kill for the first three points, then kept answering the Jets' early sideouts with kills from Alvis,
Olivia Burmeister and
Tiana Simmons. After the Jets trimmed the margin to 17-9, MSSU responded with an Alvis kill, a
Kasey Goldberg service ace and another Jets error to reach 20-9. The Lions closed the set with Burmeister involved in two of the final three Southern points, blocking for set point before finishing the 25-13 win with a kill from Morris.
Missouri Southern fought back from an 11-4 deficit in the second set, using kills from
Addysen Alvis and
Epifania Salamasina, an Alvis service ace and a Burmeister block to get within 18-16. Earlier, the Jets scored the first four points and kept MSSU chasing despite early Gardner kills that stopped separate stretches. The Lions made another push late, with Gardner putting down a kill and
Brenna Weaver adding a service ace to trim the gap to 20-19. The Jets answered by taking five of the final six points, closing the set 25-20.
MSSU pushed back late in the third set, getting a kill from
Epifania Salamasina and two Jets errors during a three-point stretch that cut the deficit to 19-18, but the Jets answered and finished off a 25-20 set. Earlier,
Addysen Alvis opened the set with a kill from
Brenna Weaver, and Morris followed with a service ace as the Lions moved in front 4-2. The Jets responded with six straight points to go ahead 8-4, but Southern worked back behind a
Tiana Simmons kill from Morris and later tied the set at 10-10 on Weaver's service ace.
Hanna Lauterbach and Salamasina added kills as Missouri Southern stayed within reach through the middle of the set, and Simmons delivered another kill to make it 22-19 before the Jets took three of the final four points.
The Lions moved within one point of the set at 24-20, but the Jets scored the final six points to take the fourth set, 26-24. Earlier, Southern faced a 13-8 deficit before winning eight straight points with
Epifania Salamasina serving, getting kills from
Hanna Lauterbach, Gardner and
Brenna Weaver and a block by
Addysen Alvis during the push to a 16-13 lead.
Addysen Alvis added three kills after that run, including points that helped MSSU reach 20-15. Burmeister and
Epifania Salamasina later delivered kills as the Lions pushed ahead 24-20, but the Jets answered with the closing run to finish the set.
