Lions Fall to Hillcats in Claremore

Claremore, Okla. - After a series at home, the Missouri Southern baseball team was back on the road Tuesday afternoon. They played Rogers State for the third time this year, completing their spread out series. The Hillcats avoided the series sweep, taking Tuesday's contest by a score of 8-4. With the loss, the Lions move to 30-10 (17-7 MIAA) on the year.

It was the hosts who got on the board first, plating a run in first and another in the second. Drew Townsend extended the third inning with a two out walk and Henry Kusiak followed with a single, but nothing would come of the threat.

The score remained 2-0 RSU until the fifth inning, when Will Doherty gave the Lions the lead with a single swing. Similar to the third inning, Townsend reached base with two outs, this time via a single. Kusiak followed with a walk, then Will Doherty blasted one to right to make it a 3-2 MSSU lead.

Rogers State wasted no time, scoring four in the bottom half of the inning to take control once again, then plated another pair in the sixth to up their score to eight. Drew Townsend led off the eighth inning with a triple to left center, then Ethan Clark drove him in with a single to the other center field gap. Despite a few base runners throughout the remainder of the game, the Lions were unable to score again, ending 8-4 in favor of the Hillcats.

Will Doherty ended the day with 3 RBI thanks to his home run, drawing two walks as well. Drew Davis was 2-4, recording a triple and a run scored. The most recent MIAA Hitter of the Week, Garrett Rice, also had a pair of hits, both being doubles.

The team will remain on the road for their next competition, taking on Northeastern State in a three game series. Game one will take place on Friday, April 12 with game time scheduled for 6:00pm.
