Maryville, Mo. - On Saturday afternoon, the Missouri Southern baseball team wrapped up their three game series with the Northwest Missouri Bearcats. Saturday's contest was the deciding factor, as NWMSU took game one in 11 innings and MSSU won game two in 12 innings. The Bearcats took game three 12-5, giving the Lions a 28-8 (15-5 MIAA) record.
The Lions were the first on the board, scoring a run with two outs in the first inning.
Wyatt Morgan extended the first frame with a double to right field, then came around to score on a Northwest error. Following that run, the Bearcats responded with three of their own to take a 3-1 lead.
Garrett Rice doubled with two outs in the second inning, and the Lions later loaded the bases, but the score would remain the same. Southern scored three in the third to take a 4-3 lead, as
Treghan Parker scored the first run of the inning with an RBI double to right.
Drew Townsend then drove in
Ethan Clark on a sacrifice fly to tie the game, and
Treghan Parker later stole home as
Garrett Rice took second to give the Lions the lead.
The hosts took the lead back in the fifth inning on a two-run home run and never looked back. They scored six more in the seventh inning and another in the eighth for 12 total on the day.
Will Doherty led off the ninth with a single and
Ethan Clark followed with a double. Later in the inning,
Drew Townsend drove in Doherty with his sacrifice fly of the day, making it a 12-5 final score.
