Southern Secures Series Win with Saturday Victory

Joplin, Mo. - The Missouri Southern baseball team was back at Warren Turner Field Saturday afternoon, hosting the Newman Jets for game two of their three game series. The Lions improved to 16-4 (4-1 MIAA) on the year with a 7-6 victory over Newman in that contest.

Treghan Parker helped the Lions to a 1-0 start in the first inning, driving in Henry Kusiak on a double to left-center. Things were pretty quiet until the third when the visitors took a 2-1 lead. Not long after, the Lions tied things at 2-2 thanks to a Henry Kusiak home run to left field.

Again, the Jets took a one run lead in fifth, but the Lions responded right back as Will Doherty hit a sacrifice fly to score Kusiak. Newman scored another in the sixth, then Missouri Southern responded with a three run bottom half of the inning to regain the lead. Treghan Parker hit a single through the right side to score Chayton Beck and Drew Townsend. Later in the inning, Wyatt Morgan was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Will Doherty to make it 6-4.

Newman cut their deficit in half in the top of the seventh, but Will Doherty homered in the eighth to make it a two run game once again. The Jets were able to score once more, creating a 7-6 final.

Treghan Parker went 2-5 at the plate, driving in 3 runs on the day. Will Doherty recorded a pair of hits in four at-bats, finishing with a home run and 2 RBI. Henry Kusiak now sits one hit away from tying, two hits from breaking the MSSU all-time hits record thanks to a 2-4 day at the plate on Saturday, recording a home run and a triple with 3 runs scored.

The teams will be back at Warren Turner Field Sunday to close out the series. First pitch for that contest is scheduled for 1:00pm.
