Lions Defeat Jets On the Road for 13th Straight Victory

Wichita, Kan. - The Missouri Southern Women's Basketball traveled to Wichita, Kansas to take on the Jets of Newman University in a conference matchup. The Lions defense continued to control the flow of the game as they defeated the Jets on the road 77-37 for their 13th straight win on the season. The Lions advance to 16-4 (12-2 MIAA) on the season.

It was an even start throughout the first five minutes of play as both teams were tied at 7-7. Both teams were struggling offensively through the first eight minutes as the Lions were 4-13 (30.8%) from the field and the Jets shot 4-11 (36.4%) as the Lions led by two free throws, 11-9. A three from Morgan Meyers was enough for the Lions to edge out the Jets at the end of the first quarter, 14-13. Brandi Hudson led the Lions in scoring in the first with four points (1-2 FG, 2-2 FT), two rebounds and an assist.

The Lions defense stepped up big in the second, forcing three Jets turnovers that turned into two points in the first two and a half minutes of play, giving the Lions a 17-13 lead. The Lions were the only team to score through the first six and a half minutes of the second quarter as the Lions went on a 13-0 run to increase their lead to 27-13. The Jets ended the half with a 9-6 scoring advantage as the Lions led the Jets at the half, 33-22. Kaitlin Hunnicutt took over in the second, finishing the half with eight points (3-9 FG, 1-4 3P), one rebound and a block. The Lions held a 22-14 rebound advantage at the half, five of which came from Reese Webb who also had two steals.

After a three point start for the Jets, Hannah Burg and Mira Khan drilled consecutive threes to obtain their biggest lead of the game, 39-25. The Lions continued to control the game on both ends as they continued their run to 17-0 to take a 50-25 lead with 2:18 remaining in the third. The Lions continued to show why they are top of the MIAA as they closed the third quarter out on a 7-2 run to take a 57-27 lead.

The Lions continued to control the game as they held a 17-8 run with 4:22 remaining to take a 74-35 lead. Both teams unloaded the benches as the Lions won their 13th straight game with a huge 40-point victory over the Jets, 77-37.

Four Lions finished in double-digits in the victory. Ryan Franklin led the Lions with 13 points (6-9 FG) and seven rebounds. Brandi Hudson finished with 12 points (3-4 FG, 6-6 FT), four rebounds and two assists. Kaitlin Hunnicutt posted 11 points (4-11 FG, 2-3 FT), three rebounds and a steal. Kryslyn Jones rounded out the double-digit scoring with 10 points (4-11 FG), two rebounds and two steals. The Lions held the Jets to only 27.3% shooting from the field on the day while shooting 43.3% from the field themselves.

The MSSU Women's Basketball team will stay on the road and head to Edmond, Oklahoma to take on the Bronchos of Central Oklahoma at 5:30 PM in Hamilton Field House.
