St. Joseph, Mo. – The Missouri Southern women's volleyball team traveled to MWSU Fieldhouse and took on the Missouri Western State University Griffins in St. Joesph, Mo. The Griffins would hold the match to three sets despite a competitive first set battle from the Lions.
Missouri Southern (4-22, 2-12) vs Missouri Western State (21-5, 11-3)
Set 1: Missouri Southern 24 | Missouri Western State 26
The first set began as a tightly contested battle, with both teams trading points. Missouri Western broke through with a 4-1 run to take a three-point lead at 8-5. However, the Lions responded, seizing their first lead of the set at 10-9 after a 4-0 run powered by kills from
Kyra Thomas and two from
Alana Moesch.
Later, the Lions put up another four points, reclaiming the lead at 17-15 with contributions from
Fernanda Merancio and two consecutive aces by
Sydney Unruh. Both teams continued to exchange scoring runs, but the Griffins closed out the set with a decisive 3-0 rally.
Set 2: Missouri Southern 11 | Missouri Western State 25
Missouri Western carried their momentum into the second set, jumping out to an early 9-3 lead. The Lions interrupted their run with a kill from
Amelia Neels, followed by a kill from
Fernanda Merancio and blocks from
Kyra Thomas and
Anny Montano to bring the score to 10-6. The Griffins answered with a seven-point run to widen their lead to 19-7.
Missouri Southern continued to battle, with kills from
Addysen Alvis,
Josey Goldberg, and two more from Neels, but Missouri Western held on to secure the second set.
Set 3: Missouri Southern 18 | Missouri Western State 25
The Griffins started the third set with a 4-0 rally before
Amelia Neels, assisted by
Hannah Allick, halted their momentum with a powerful kill. The Lions responded with a 4-1 run of their own, featuring kills from
Alana Moesch and
Addysen Alvis and an ace from Allick, tying the score at 9-9.
Missouri Western later surged ahead with a decisive six-point run, building a 23-14 lead. Despite a late push by Missouri Southern, with contributions from
Kyra Thomas (kill), Alvis (kill), Moesch (ace), and
Anny Montano (kill), Missouri Western held their lead and claimed the set.
