Emporia, Kan. - The Missouri Southern Women's Basketball team traveled to Emporia, Kansas on Sunday, January 21, to take on the Lady Hornets of Emporia State in a conference matchup. The Lions dominated on both ends of the floor to walk out of Emporia with their 10th straight win, defeating the Lady Hornets, 76-43. The Lions advance to 13-4 (9-2 MIAA) on the season.
It was a back-and-forth start to the game consisting of three lead changes in the first five minutes of play.
Mira Khan kept the Lions in the game early scoring eight straight points in less than two minutes of play for the Lions. Neither team went on a significant run which concluded in a 22-19 lead for the Lions at the end of the first quarter.
Mira Khan led the Lions in scoring with eight points (3-3 FG, 1-1 3P) and one rebound.
It was the Lions defense that helped build a lead early in the second, allowing the Lady Hornets to only convert two of their first 10 shots before the media timeout at 4:13.
Maggie Sockey converted five unanswered straight points to help build the Lions lead to 10, 34-24, with 2:40 remaining. The Lady Hornets continued to struggle against the Lions defense and were not able to convert a field goal in the last 4:46 of play, only making two of 14 shots from the field in the quarter. The Lions went into the halftime locker room with a 37-24 lead after a huge quarter on both ends.
Kryslyn Jones (3-8 FG, 2-7 3P) and
Mira Khan (3-3 FG, 1-1 3P) both ended the first half with a team-high eight points.
Kaitlin Hunnicutt was everywhere in the first half with six points (2-4 FG, 2-3 3P), three assists, two rebounds and two blocks.
It was an even start to the third quarter as the Lions edged out a 9-8 scoring advantage before the media timeout at 4:59 to slightly grow their lead to 46-32. The Lions ended the quarter with a barrage of three pointers, three from
Kryslyn Jones and one from
Morgan Meyers, to end the third quarter with a 59-37 lead.
After a 4-3 scoring advantage for the Lady Hornets to start the fourth, the Lions went on a 12-0 run to build an unreachable 33-point lead with 3:11 remaining. The Lions won their 10th straight game of the season with a 76-43 victory over the Lady Hornets.
Three Lions finished in double-digits in the victory.
Kryslyn Jones led the Lions with 22 points (7-16 FG, 6-13 3P), six assists, four steals and three rebounds.
Mira Khan posted 11 points (4-4 FG, 2-2 3P), four rebounds and one block.
Ryan Franklin rounded out the double-digit scoring with 10 points (5-9 FG), six rebounds, six blocks and one assist. The Lions held the Lady Hornets to only 23.4% shooting from the field and assisted on 24 of the 27 total shots for Missouri Southern.
The MSSU Women's Basketball team will return to Joplin to host the Riverhawks of Northeastern State on Wednesday, January 24, at 5:30 in Leggett and Platt Athletic Center.
