St. Augustine, Fla. - The MSSU volleyball team was back in action Friday, playing in the Flagler Saints Classic. In their two games of the day, the Lions dropped the first match but finished the day with a strong victory. The team improves to 5-1 (0-0 MIAA) on the year.
MSSU vs. Embry-Riddle
The Eagles came out strong, winning the first set 25-15. In the second set, the Lions had a stretch of four points followed shortly after by a run of five points, but Embry-Riddle would take the set 25-20. MSSU made a late push in the third, scoring four unanswered points, but the Eagles took the set 25-19 and the match 3-0.
Hannah Allick recorded another double-double, finishing with 21 assists and 10 digs.
Fernanda Canedo led the Lions with 10 kills.
MSSU vs. Converse
The second match of the day went much different for Southern, as they had a few strong runs to take the first set 25-17. The teams went back and forth late in the second set, but MSSU came out on top 25-19. In the third, the Lions had near back-to-back runs of four points each, helping them to a 25-16 victory.
Fernanda Canedo had a double-double, finishing with 13 kills and 14 digs.
Jaryn Benning also had 11 kills on an attack percentage of .455. Landrey VanOvershelde led the assists category with 30 in the match.
Missouri Southern will play two more contests in the Flagler Saints Classic tomorrow, taking on Flagler at 12:00 PM and Missouri-St. Louis at 4:00 PM.
