Men Finish 2nd, Women 5th at MIAA Outdoor Championships

Jefferson City, Mo. - The nationally ranked Missouri Southern outdoor track and field programs completed the 2023 MIAA Outdoor Championships at Dwight T. Reed Stadium on Sunday, May 7th with 10 additional NCAA Qualifying marks, three event wins and two school records being broken.

The ninth ranked men's program finished in second with 106 points and the 11th ranked women's program finished in fifth with 84 points. 14 athletes won All-MIAA honors over the two days of competition in Chardae Overstreet (Women's 400m Dash and 4x100m Relay Team), Cedric Pearson (Men's Shot Put Champion and Discus Throw), Connor Boyd (Men's hammer Throw), Cornesia Calhoun-White (Women's 4x100m Relay Team), Gidieon Kimutai (Men's 10000m Run Champion), Jon Watts (Men's Long Jump), Kelie Henderson (Women's 1500m Run), Kiara Smith (Women's 100m Hurdles Champion and 4x100m Relay Team), LaNea Wallace (Women's 4x100m Relay Team), Lilah Genel (Women's 5000m Run), Peyton Barton (Men's Hammer Throw Champion and Discus Throw), Rajheim Carby (Men's Javelin Champion), Samariae Bonds (Women's Shot Put Champion) and Taris Jackson (Men's Triple Jump). 
 
Shot Put
  • Samariae Bonds won the women's event with an NCAA Qualifying mark of 15.59m to earn the team 10 points. Her mark is the eighth best distance in program history.
  • Cedric Pearson won the men's event with an NCAA Qualifying mark of 18.01m to earn the team 10 points.

Hurdles
  • Kiara Smith won the women's 100m event with an NCAA Qualifying mark of 13.48 seconds the third best time in program history and Mya Ferguson finished seventh with a time of 14.45 to earn the team 12 points.
  • LaNea Wallace finished fourth in the women's 400m event with an NCAA Qualifying mark of 1:01.01 to earn the team five points.
  • JaDarius Pigg finished sixth in the men's 110m event with an NCAA Qualifying mark of 14.31 seconds which is tied for the fifth best time in program history and Maksym Andurukhiv finished eighth with a time of 16.58 to earn the team four points.
 
Discus Throw
  • Pearson and Peyton Barton finished second and third in the men's event with NCAA Qualifying marks of 52.83m and 52.40m.
 
5000m Run
  • Lilah Genel finished second in the women's event to earn All-MIAA honors with a time of 17:57.65 and Jenari Lopez finished fifth with a time of 18:07.39 to earn the team 12 points. Riley Vickrey finished 18th with a time of 19:05.77 and Kelie Henderson finished 26th with a time of 19:31.10.
  • JP Rutledge finished sixth in the men's event with a time of 15:23.97 to earn the team three points. Jaden Deaton finished 13th with a time of 15:45.13 and Zachary Finley finished 17th with a time of 15:59.07.
 
Relays
  • The women's 4x100m relay team of Kiara Smith, Chardae Overstreet, Cornesia Calhoun-White and LaNea Wallace finished third to earn All-MIAA honors in the event with an NCAA Qualifying mark of 45.97 seconds. Their time is a new school record beating the previous record time they did earlier this season by two hundredths of a second.
  • The men's 4x100m relay team of Bryan Candrl, Malachi Pipkin, Kyzer Gann-Vega and Jon Watts finished eighth in the event with a time of 41.42 seconds to earn the team a point.
  • The men's 4x400m relay team of Gann-Vega, Kelton Sorrell, Jacob Breedlove and Watts finished eighth with a time of 3:16.71 to earn the team a point.
  • The women's 4x400m relay team of Ferguson, Wallace, Smith and Overstreet finished 10th with a time of 3:53.54 to earn the team a point. Their time is the tenth best time in program history.
Triple Jump
  • Taris Jackson finished third in the men's event with an NCAA Qualifying mark of 15.10m to earn the team six points.
  • Jennifer Okeke finished fifth in the women's event with a mark of 11.78m to earn the team four points.
 
400m Dash
  • Chardae Overstreet finished third in the women's event to earn All-MIAA honors with an NCAA Qualifying mark of 54.21 seconds for six points and set a new school record beating her time she achieved at the John McDonnell Invitational.
 
1500m Run
  • Kelie Henderson finished third in the women's event to earn All-MIAA honors with a time of 4:39.16 and earned six points for the team. Kayanna Gaines finished 11th with a time of 4:46.04.
  • Geordan Patrylak finished 17th in the men's event with a time of 4:01.46.
 
800m Run
  • Gabe McClain finished fourth in the men's event with a time of 1:53.16 to earn the team five points.
 
High Jump
  • Luke Brumit finished eighth in the men's event with a mark of 2.06m to earn the team a point.
  • Rylee Darnell finished ninth in the women's event with a mark of 1.60m.
