Joplin, Mo. - The 13th Ranked Missouri Southern baseball program claimed the decisive game, 8-4 in a best-of-three series against Newman on Sunday, May 7th at Warren Turner Field.
Southern (40-13) finished with four batters collecting two hits as
Nate Mieszkowski,
Ethan Clark and
Drew Davis finished with two RBI each.
Trent Harris won his fifth gae of the season with six strikeouts in 5.0 innings allowing only two hits and one earned run,
Laif Hultine closed out the game throwing the last 1.2 innings with one hit allowed and three strikeouts.Â
A Davis sacrifice fly to right field scored
Matt Miller in the second inning for the first runs scored in the game by either team. Newman (23-30) tied it up with a home run in the third inning for the first home run of the series between the two team.
In the fifth inning the Lions claimed the lead from a Clark double to right center scoring
Treghan Parker and Mieszkowski for a 3-1 advantage. Southern increased the lead up to 8-1 in the sixth inning with a Davis RBI triple,
Will Doherty RBI double,
Chayton Beck RBI double and Mieszkowski two-run home run.
The Jets attempted to mount a comeback scoring three runs in the eighth inning before Hultine came in and got a fielder's choice on his first pitch and struck out the next batter to maintain the 8-4 lead. In the ninth, Hultine made quick work of the first batter inducing a fly out on his second pitch before striking out the second batter and following a hit recorded the last out of the game with a strikeout looking.
Up next for the Lions will be Northeastern State in the MIAA Tournament semifinals at Crane Stadium at Tompkins Field in Warrensburg, Mo. at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 11th.
