Topeka, Kan. - The Missouri Southern men's basketball program fell 84-64 to Washburn on Thursday inside Lee Arena to begin the final week of the regular season.
Leading the Lions (16-11, 12-9 MIAA) was led by
Sam Thompson with 15 points going 6-for-6 from the field.
Avery Taggart added in 11 points and five rebounds with
Parker Long having 10 points and three assists from the bench.
Washburn (14-13, 11-10 MIAA) was led by Jaden Monday with 23 points.
In the first half the Lions got out to an early 5-2 lead following a Dessesow jumper with 18:20 left and after Washburn claimed a lead fought back to tie it up 10-10 with 15:03 left in the half following a Dessesow three. Washburn would catch fire in the middle portion of the quarter going on an 24-4 run and ultimately went into the half up 46-27.
The second half an 8-2 run by the Lions capped off by a
Vinson Sigmon Jr. floater with 9:19 left made it a 19 point game, 67-48. Washburn responded with a 17-7 run and a 9-0 run to end the game by the Lions made it an 84-64 final score.
Up next for the Lions will be #2 Northwest Missouri in Maryville, Mo. with the regular season champion Bearcats set to honor their seniors as tip-off from Bearcat Arena is set for 3:30pm on Saturday.
