St. Joseph, Mo. - The Missouri Southern Women's Basketball team continued MIAA play on Saturday, December 2, against the Griffons of Missouri Western. A dominant second half was enough for the Griffons to win the conference matchup over the Lions, 73-55. The Lions advance to 3-4 (0-2 MIAA) on the season.
It was a defensive battle throughout the first quarter with both teams shooting under 35 percent from the field. The Griffons were able to come out on top after 10 minutes of play with a 13-11 lead.
Kaitlin Hunnicutt was the leading scorer for the Lions in the first with three points (1-4 FG) and two rebounds.
After a quick start for both teams to begin the second quarter, the Lions went on a 6-0 run to take a 25-20 lead with 5:12 remaining in the half. The Griffons returned with a 9-2 run to end the half with a 29-27 lead over the Lions.
Kaitlin Hunnicutt continued to lead the Lions in scoring with 13 points (4-8 FG, 2-2 FT) and grabbed three rebounds.
With the help of a 12-0 run, the Griffons began to take control in the third quarter. The Griffons held the Lions to under 30 percent from the field in the third and took a 57-42 lead with one quarter remaining.
The Griffons did not slow down in the fourth and added to their sizable lead to win over the Lions, 73-55.
Two Lions finished in double-digits on the day.
Kaitlin Hunnicutt led the Lions with 17 points (5-14 FG, 3-4 FT) and seven rebounds.
Maggie Sockey posted 13 points (2-5 FG, 9-9 FT), three rebounds and one assist.
The MSSU Women's Basketball team will host their first game of the season in a conference matchup against the Bronchos of Central Oklahoma on December 7 at 5:30 PM at Leggett and Platt Athletic Center.
