Lions Win Fourth Straight With Dominant Victory Over Lincoln

Jefferson City, Mo. - The Missouri Southern Women's Basketball team traveled to Jefferson City, Missouri on Saturday, December 16, to take on the Blue Tigers of Lincoln University in conference play. A huge first quarter on both ends set the pace of play for the remainder of the game as the Lions won their fourth straight conference game this season, beating Lincoln 76-57. The Lions advance to 7-4 (4-2 MIAA) on the season.

The Lions began the game in control, starting with a 10-0 run and not allowing the Blue Tigers to score for the first six minutes of the game. After the Blue Tigers finally got their first bucket, the Lions went right back to work and went on another 10-0 run. It was an all-around dominant quarter for the Lions that gave them a 22-4 lead after 10 minutes of play. Maggie Sockey led the Lions in scoring in the first with 10 points (4-6 FG, 2-3 FT), two rebounds and an assist.

The Lions continued to be aggressive on both ends of the floor in the second, outscoring the Blue Tigers 13-4 in the first six minutes of the quarter. The Lions finished the half shooting 48.5 percent from the field and only allowing Lincoln to convert 24.2 percent of their shots, therefore taking a 41-17 lead at halftime. Maggie Sockey continued to be the leading scorer at the half with 12 points (5-9 FG, 2-3 FT), three rebounds and two assists. Kryslyn Jones also began to find her rhythm as she finished the half with seven points (3-6 FG) and grabbed four rebounds.

It was a much closer game in the third quarter as far as scoring, with both teams scoring 13 points with only four minutes left in the quarter. The Lions closed out the third with a 10-0 run and took a commanding 34 point, 64-30, lead going into the final 10 minutes.

The Blue Tigers began the final quarter hot from the field, going on a 11-0 run in just over three minutes. Despite an early run from Lincoln, head coach Ronnie Ressel subbed in the remainder of the Lion bench and allowed every player minutes on the floor. An all around great performance from the Lions gave them their fourth consecutive win, beating the Blue Tigers 76-57.

Three Lions finished in double-digits in the victory. Maggie Sockey led the Lions in scoring with 15 points (6-11 FG, 2-3 3P), five rebounds and three assists. Kaitlin Hunnicutt finished with 14 points (5-9 FG, 3-6 3P), three rebounds and two assists. Mia Topping rounded out the double-digit scoring with 12 points (4-7 FG, 3-4 FT).

The MSSU Women's Basketball team will compete in their final game of 2023 on Tuesday, December 19, for a non-conference matchup with the #20 Lady Panthers of Drury in Springfield, Missouri at 6:00 PM in the O'Reilly Family Event Center.
