Scouting the Lions
The Lions began the season at the MIAA/GAC crossover at White Auditorium, located in Emporia, Kansas, where they defeated GAC's Harding, 76-72, and Henderson State, 85-68. The Lions most recently took their first loss on the road to #12 Southern Nazarene, 73-52.
Ryan Franklin posted a double-double in the first two games for the Lions this season, averaging 13.7 points 9.7 rebounds.
Kryslyn Jones heads into Friday's contest two points shy of 700 total points over her collegiate career.
In total, Southern returned two starters and six total squad members from the 2022-23 season.
Scouting the Rambelles
The Angelo State University Rambelles enter Friday's competition with a 3-2 record on the 2023-24 season. They began the year at the D2CCA Tipoff Classic where they finished 1-2 after losing to UMary, 81-67, and Gannon, 63-76, and winning over Minot State, 83-68. The Rambelles went on to defeat MSU Denver, 64-39, and Western Colorado, 64-55, in the TWU Conference Challenge.Â
Leading the scoring for ASU is Sawyer Lloyd, a 5-9 senior guard. Through five games, Lloyd is averaging 13.6 points per game on 35.5% shooting from the field, and 37.5% from beyond the arc. She also has 27 assists and 10 steals. Two other Rambelles are averaging 10+ points per game, Tayjanna McGhee-Pleasant (11.0), and Madeline Stephens (10.6). The rebounding category is led by Tayjanna McGhee-Pleasant, averaging 8.0 per game.
Scouting the Mustangs
The Midwestern State University Mustangs enter Saturday's competition with a 0-3 record on the 2023-24 season. They began the year at the Ashbrook Comfort Inn Suites Classic where they went 0-2 after losing to UC Colorado Springs, 83-65, and Adams State (Colo.), 102-84. The Mustangs continued their losing pattern with losses to Southeastern Oklahoma, 77-62, and Oklahoma Baptist, 85-59.
Leading the scoring for MSU is Kertisa Amos, a 5-9 fifth-year guard. Through four games, Amos is averaging 17.5 points per game on 45.3% shooting from the field, and 33.3% from beyond the arc. She also has 28 rebounds and 9 steals. Zarria Carter is the only other Mustang to average 10+ points per game with 15.8. The rebounding category is led by Zarria Carter, averaging 11.3 per game.
