Tahlequah, Okla. – The Missouri Southern soccer program looked well on their way to collect at least a point on the road but a late goal by Northeastern State tonight at DeLoache Field sealed a RiverHawk win.
The Lions (1-9, 1-3 MIAA) were led by
Ashley Koepp with four shots tonight including two shots on goal,
Jori Hays fired off three shots and along with
Banner Williams had a shot on goal as well.
Lilly Doneghue recorded six saves in goal playing the full 90 minutes.
Northeastern State (4-1-6, 1-1-2 MIAA) was led by Payton Lieb with five shots and two shots on goal while goal scorer Alexis Rodgers had two shots in 18 minutes off the bench. Ainsley Cunningham collected four saves in goal for the RiverHawks playing the full 90 minutes.
The first half saw an open exchange of chances and shots with the RiverHawks getting off nine to the Lions seven but the Lions did hold a 5-4 advantage off corners and had a chance in the seventh minute as a
Sofia Fatino shot went wide off a corner. Southern got off three shots from the 30
th-to-35
th minute with a Koepp shot being saved as the Lions were looking to get on the board before halftime.
In the second half both teams were able to create more chances with both teams hunting for the first goal of the night. For the second half the lions got off eight shots while the RiverHawks had 11 with both teams forcing three saves.
During the 57
th minute of play the Lions were able to get a shot off as a Koepp effort in the box was saved before being shortly followed by a Hays shot from outside the box in the 60
th minute requiring Cunningham to make a save. The final shot on goal for the game was in the 70
th minute as Williams let loose on a shot inside the box but Cunningham corralled it to preserve a 0-0 tie at that time.
The RiverHawks would score in the 87
th minute off a rebound from a cross to seal the 1-0 win. Up next for the Lions is Rogers State on Sunday from Claremore with kickoff from Soldier Field set for 1:00pm.
