Lions Lose Heated Battle Against Bearcats

Joplin, Mo. – The Missouri Southern soccer program finished up non-conference play this evening against Northwest Missouri losing 3-0 at Hal Bodon Field.

The Lions (0-6) were led by Lilly Doneghue with four saves in goal, Ashley Koepp led the team with two shots and along with Aisley Stevens and Kylie Stonestreet had a shot on goal tonight.

Northwest Missouri (4-1-2) had three different goal scorers with Kaylie Rock leading the team with six shots, three shots on goal while having a goal and two assists. Lily Ellis was stationed in goal tonight for the Bearcats and picked up three saves.

In the first half the two teams traded possession for spells but both had chances to score with both goalies being forced into action to preserve the scoreless tie heading into the half. Stonestreet forced Ellis into a save in the 9th minute for the first shot of the game by either team and in the 32nd Koepp forced Ellis into a save as well.

The second half was where the action heated up all three goals being scored after the 70th minute and four cards being handed out. Northwest struck first in the 70th to go ahead before extending the lead in the 76th and 78th minutes for the final scoreline of 3-0. The Lions were not devoid of opportunity with Stevens forcing a save from an outstretched Ellis to preserve the game to from tipping in the Lions favor in the 64th minute.

Up next for the Lions will be Missouri Western on Sunday at 2:00pm from Hal Bodon Field. The pair will be playing the first MIAA game of the season and it is a rematch of a game played last Sunday up in St. Joseph.
