Lions Handle Bulldogs

Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team scored six runs over the second and third innings and the pitching staff held visiting Minnesota-Duluth scoreless as the Lions shutout the Bulldogs, 7-0 today at Warren Turner Field.

Southern (12-8) got a three-run homer from Treghan Parker, while Jordan Fitzpatrick went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. Matt Miller scored twice and drove in a run, while Nate Mieszkowski was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Jeremiah Kennedy started and went five innings, striking out five to get the win and move to 1-0 on the season. Scott Duensing, Ryan Paschal, Cale McCallister and Laif Hultine all threw an inning in relief to hold the Bulldogs' bats silent.

UMD (4-2) got three hits from Ethan Cole and two from Brant Kolpack.

The Lions started the scoring in the second when Mieszkowski singled home Miller before scoring himself on an RBI from Drew Davis. Southern then scored four runs in the third, three of which coming on a three-run home run from Parker, his fifth of the season. The other run came on an RBI double from Miller.

MSSU added another run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly from Fitzpatrick to score Clay Milas

Southern will be back in action this weekend as the Lions travel to Central Oklahoma for a three-game set.
