Southern Open Lion Classic With A Sweep Of McKendree

Joplin, Mo. – The Missouri Southern softball program wrapped up day one of the Lion Classic hosted at the Pat Lipira Softball Complex with a sweep over McKendree.

The Lions (9-7) came away 4-2 winners in game one with Leighton Withers and Abby DeSanto hitting home runs. McKendree (4-8) got on the board first in the top half of the fourth inning as both teams were held scoreless before then.

Josie Tofpi began the bottom half of the fourth inning for Southern with a triple to right center before Withers hit a sacrifice fly to score Tofpi and tie it up 1-1 after four complete innings. In the fourth the Lions kept the Bearcats off the scoreboard before putting two runs up thanks to a pinch hit Abby DeSanto home run over the field field fence for her first collegiate home run and put the Lions ahead 3-1.

McKendree got a run back in the sixth inning but Withers lead off for the Lions and sent one over the right field fencing for the final score of 4-2. Kara Amos picked up her third win of the season pitching 7.0 innings and struck out seven batters.

Game two saw the Lions run-rule the McKendree 10-2 after five innings. Ashlynn Williams had a game-high four RBIs while Adrianna Young added three and Kara Amos provided two additional RBIs.

A busy first inning by the Lions as they scored six runs with Williams and Amos picking up an RBI in base loaded situations while Young cleared the bases with a triple to left center before later scoring after a pitching change off a Tori Frazier triple to right center. Southern was not done scoring as Yazmin Vargas started off the inning with a single before stealing her 40thbases in her career to move into eighth in career steals at the school and would score later on off a Williams triple to right field that also scored Leighton Withers

Amos scored Williams with a double to left center to close the scoring in the quarter and head to the third inning with a 9-0 lead. The Bearcats got a run in the third and fourth quarter before the Lions sealed the win with a Williams doble to left field to score Izzy Medrano who was pitch running. McKendree grounded into a double play and later flew out to end the game in the fifth inning for the Lions fourth run-rule win of the season.

Southern will close out the Lion Classic tomorrow with a double-header against Rockhurst at 2:00 and 4:00 pm approximately from the Pat Lipira Softball Complex.
